The Fergus Falls 12U B girls’ hockey team kicked off their 2019-20 hockey season traveling to Grand Forks for an invitational tournament. Twelve teams from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Canada showed up to compete in the three day competition.

The Otters started out the tournament by facing the host team, Grand Forks. With just under ten minutes into the first period Shay Katzenmeyer got the game's first goal, assisted by Rachel Debrito, giving the Otters a 1-0 lead. Two and a half minutes later the Otters doubled their lead when  Brook Zierden scored unassisted. Fergus Falls continued to score five more times throughout the game. Two more goals came towards the end of the first period when Debrito scored, unassisted, and Hannah Johnson, with nine seconds left in the first period, scored the fourth consecutive goal for Otters on a powerplay, assisted by Katzenmeyer. The second period was all Fergus Falls as Johnson and Kalysta Arndt scored. Johnson assisted Arndt as they took a 6-0 lead into period number three. Both teams exchanged goals in the final period as Debrito scored the lone goal for the Otters in the third. The girls went on to beat Grand Forks 7-1.

The Otters faced a very talented Winnipeg team, Saturday, in game two of the weekend tournament. Two of the seven goals that Winnipeg scored were unassisted. Winnipeg scored three times in the first period, once in the second period, and three more in the final period, giving them a 7-0 victory over the Otters.

Game three of the tournament brought on a great bounce back game for the Otters. They played Crookston who came out skating hard and took a 0-1 lead against the Otter girls. However, it was all Otters after that. They scored seven consecutive goals after giving up an early lead. Debrito scored, assisted by Zierden to start the comeback. Ava Noon and Johnson scored 17 seconds apart as the Otters lead went to 3-1. Izzybelle Kenyon-Woessner scored the final goal of the second period, assisted by Ava Thompson. The third period was entertaining as five total goals were scored. Debrito, Johnson, and Zierden all scored unassisted as the Otters doubled their score and now led 6-1. Crookston cut the lead to four with an unassisted goal themselves. The final goal of the period came from number six, Katzenmeyer, assisted by Johnson.

The fourth and final game for the Otters was against the Fargo Freeze. The Freeze scored the first goal of the game before the Otters’, Debrito, put them on the board with just under five minutes remaining in the first. Arndt scored back-to-back goals assisted by Kenyon-Woessner and Debrito. Katzenmeyer added to the lead with Johnson assisting. Johnson then scored a goal of her own, assisted by Katzenmeyer and Olivia Jurgens. The last two goals for the Otters were scored unassisted by; Atley Duckwitz and Debrito. The Otter girls went on to win by a score of 7-4.

The 12U B girls finished with a 3-1 record on the weekend. The Otters’ next competition will be this Saturday, in Crookston.
