Jacob Cook led all scorers with 20 points as the Ashby boys’ basketball team defeated Hillcrest Lutheran Academy 67-48 in a Little Eight Conference contest on Thursday.

Noah Johnson had 15 and Hunter Norby 14.  Jaden Norby and Torin Olson rounded out the balanced Arrow scoring attack with 9 points apiece.  Jaden was active on the glass gathering 11 rebounds.  The Arrows shot 49% (26/53) from the field and committed 15 turnovers.

Ashton Ecker dished out three assists and had a good handle on running the offense,” said Ashby Head Coach John Holsten.  “We had solid bench play from Derrek Bartz, Bobby Anderson, and Miles Hoff.  They gave us a lift when foul trouble became a factor.  Hillcrest's offense has great ball and player movement.  Our defensive activity improved as the game moved on.”

Sam Brumfield led Hillcrest with 12 points, Joel Quam had 10 and Thomas Zwiers scored 9.  Jowell Seymour led the Comets with 4 assists and James Cho pulled down 5 boards.  Zwiers and Micah Foss led HLA with 4 steals each.

“We came out with great energy on defense, playing full court defense, jumping passes and diving for loose balls,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Ryan Garvin.  “We found ourselves up 25-20 midway through the first half as we forced Ashby into quite a few turnovers early on.  A credit to Ashby though for their persistence.  They extended the floor, sending a runner to their offensive end after we put up a shot.  They likely scored eight to ten transition baskets using that attack and we did not do a great job of recognizing it or communicating about it as it was happening.  We did a good job early of crashing the boards, but I think their size and discipline wore us down a bit throughout the contest.”

Next up for the 1-1 Arrows is a Little Eight Conference game Tuesday evening in Underwood.
