Four Goal Second Period Carries Alexandria Girls to Win Over Willmar

The Alexandria girls’ hockey team put 40 shots on the Willmar net on Thursday night and defeated the Cardinals 6-2.  Willmar had 24 shots on goal and Alexandria goalie Hailee Bailey stopped 22 of them.

An Ashley Larson goal, assisted by Jaidon Bredesen and Nina Dawson gave Willmar a 1-0 lead at 6:36 of the opening period.

Alexandria took control of the game with four second period goals.  Hanley Block scored an unassisted shorthanded goal at 4:34 to tie the game.  Kaci Trosvig scored from Anna Doherty at 10:56 to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.  They increased their lead to 3-0 on an unassisted goal by Ella Westlund at 15:24 and extended the lead to 4-0 at 16:03 when Ali Castle scored from Doherty and Meg Shercliffe.

Willmar cut the lead to 4-2 with a power play goal from Madison Garberding, assisted by Bailey Olson and Mya Monson 2:46 into the third period.  Block scored an unassisted goal, her second counter of the night, at 4:22 and Lauren Maras ended the Alexandria scoring at 10:08, from Marki Oberg and Westlund.
