New York Mills Boys Win Shootout in Wheaton

New York Mills and Wheaton/Herman-Norcross combined for 194 points on Tuesday night as they opened the boys’ high school basketball season in Wheaton with a 101-93 Eagles win over the Warriors.  Mills shot 49.3% from the field and made 40% of their 3’s, while the Warriors connected on 43.8% of their field goal attempts and went 19-of-22 on the free throw line.

New York Mills held a 56-36 advantage on the boards and tallied 38 points in transition.  The Eagles also came up with 17 steals in the game.

Wheaton led 55-42 at the half, however, the Eagles turned up the defensive intensity in the second half and broke loose for 59 second half points to overcome that 13 point halftime deficit, holding the Warriors to 38 points over the final 18 minutes.

Derin Gaudette made 5 three’s and led New York Mills with 29 points.  Tate Olson added 28, converting 9-of-10 free throws.  Jonah Johnson and Breck Hensch were also in double figures with 19 and 10 points, respectively.

Leaders for the Warriors were Matt Thielen with 33 points and Nick Lupkes with 13 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists.  Dylan Bainbridge and Zach Braaten had 10 points apiece and Clint Determan had a game high 18 rebounds to go along with 9 points and 5 assists.
