The Underwood boys’ basketball team opened their season with an impressive 62-47 road win over Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley on Tuesday night.

“This was a great overall team win to start the season,” commented Underwood Head Coach Evan Meece.  “Offensively, we spread the ball around the court with all five starters scoring in double figures.  In the first half we played really solid defense and held CGB in check.  We worked the ball around to get good solid looks.  In the second half our defense slid a bit and our offense forced a little too much, allowing them to stick around in the game longer than we should have, but we never backed down or looked back on our lead.”

Canaan Kugler had a team high 15 points for the Rockets.  Winston Heifort and Braden Thorson added 13 points apiece and Krosby Aasness added 11.  Logan Nelson finished with 10 points.

“In the end, we grinded out a hard fought battle and secured a great team win,” noted Meece.  “I’m really proud of the way the team played together and got the victory.  We will look forward to building on the successes of this game moving forward.”

Cole Gilsdorf led the Wolverines with 21 points and 5 assists, and Chuck Kneidl added 13 points and 4 assists.  Nate Moberg had 8 points and 15 rebounds.  Ryan Geary came up with 10 boards.

“The length of Underwood got to us at the beginning of the game,” said C-G-B Head Coach Ethan Pearson.  “We did not shoot the ball great in the first half as we hit only 4-of-18 from 3-point range.  In the second half we trimmed our 19 point halftime deficit to six at one point with about three minutes left and then ended up fouling to try getting back into the game.  I was really proud of the way my boys never gave up on the game when they were down by as many as 21 at one point.  It is really nice to see in the first game of the year!  For many of our players this was the first varsity action they have seen and I was very impressed with the effort that we put forward.”
