The West Central Area Knights started their season with an 86-51 win over the Ashby Arrows in Ashby on Tuesday night.  The Knights used a balanced scoring attack with four players in double figures and many more contributing.

Grant Beuckens led the way with 19 points and 6 steals, Jack VanKempen added a double-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and also had 5 assists; Tate Christenson added 15 points, and Blake Koloski came off the bench with 15 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and took 2 charges.  Jacob Bright had an impressive floor game with 6 points, 5 assists, 5 steals, and 10 deflections.  Ryder Staples (6 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal) and Brady Reeve (4 points and 8 rebounds) provided more punch off the bench.  Gage Staples added 4 points and Braedon Blondeau 2 points.

Knight Coach Kraig Hunter said, "I've already stated coming into the season that we have eight players that can score in double figures on any given night.  It was fun to watch unselfish basketball with so many guys contributing.  That balance will make us tough to guard. So many guys contributed but I have to give a mention to two of our more experienced players with their leadership.  Jack VanKempen and Jacob Bright have shown a new maturity this year. Jack is a well-rounded player in all parts of the game and I like how he is letting the game come to him. He can go inside, shoot outside, and distribute the ball to teammates.  He is not forcing it in any one area and just taking what the defense gives us.  Jacob has expanded his game so much as well.  He is a floor general out there and plays so poised.  I like how vocal he is, how positive he is with his teammates and how he is like another coach on the floor."

"Like the start to any season, the defense is usually ahead of the offense at this point. Our defense was very active.  Our offense was good at times, but always many things we need to keep working on."

The Knights hit 33-71 shots for 46% and hit 11-28 threes.  The Knights also made their free throws making 9-11.  Ashby made 18-46 shots for 39% and hit 5-18 threes.  They shot 10-18 from the free throw line.  The Knights defense forced 18 Ashby turnovers while only committing seven.  The rebounding battle was even at 38-38.

Hunter Norby led the Arrows with 15 points, Jacob Cook added 12 in his first varsity start, Jaden Norby had 9 points and 12 rebounds, Torin Olson contributed 8 points, and Noah Johnson 7.

“We were behind by 12 at halftime (41-29) but couldn't get anything going in the second half,” commented Ashby Head Coach John Holsten.  “Turnovers (21 overall) hurt us and they shot the ball extremely well.  The Knights are a fundamentally sound club and they defend aggressively.  They have multiple scoring threats.”

The Arrows travel to Hillcrest Thursday evening.
