The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines lost three seniors, including a pair of starters, to graduation last spring.  With three starters returning a number of returning letter winners WDC is poised to improve on their 8-19 overall record and their 6-8 conference mark this season.

“I am excited for our depth and athleticism,” said Head Coach Kevin Tumberg, now in his fifth year.  “We are going to be a fast, smart team this year.  We only have one or two true post players, so inside presence will be a weakness.  We have a lot of players capable of handling the basketball and scoring the basketball.  We will need to lock in on the defensive end if we want to be successful this season.”

Seniors Bereket Loer (Guard) and Cooper Folkestad (Forward), and sophomore Payton Rondestvedt (Guard) are all returning starters.  Other letter winners coming back include seniors Lucas Hinojos (Guard) and Joshua Tabery (Guard), and juniors Zach Shaw (Guard), Tony Kreklau (Guard), Aiden Larson (Guard) and Corbett Wensmann (Forward).

“The majority of last year’s letter winners were getting varsity action for the first time,” stated Tumberg.  “We will be relying on them heavily this season.”

Alex Brockpahler, Cory Kapphahn and Ryan Nelson will serve as assistants.

“Henning is the reigning conference champion and is the favorite to claim that title again,” said Coach Tumberg.  “Fergus Falls, Perham, Breckenridge and EGF are my view of the top teams in Section 8AA.”
