As he begins his sixth season as Head Coach of the Pelican Rapids boys’ basketball team, John Gullingsrud returns a strong nucleus of varsity players, led by Heart O’ Lakes Conference all-conference performer McHale Korf (12.9ppg, 5.6apg, 3.7rpg), a junior guard.

Three other juniors are back for the Vikings, including guard Jayden Rutherford (11.1ppg, 2.1apg) and forwards Logan Fahje (8.9ppg, 2.6apg, 3.4rpg) and Liam Sytsma (4.1ppg, 3.8rpg).

Seniors Logan Petznick (Guard), Kirby Nelson (Forward) and David Johnston (Guard), and juniors Justin VerDorn (Guard) and Weston Funk (Guard) are all expected to contribute at the varsity level.

“We return a good nucleus of players from last year and we are expecting those players to set the tone for our program this season,” acknowledged Coach Gullingsrud.  “We have a nice mix of perimeter and inside play and should be able to score in a variety of ways.  Rebounding and defense will be the deciding factors for our ability to compete with the top teams in our conference and section.”

Adam Johnson (JV), Derrick Nelson (C Squad), Doug Bruggeman (Junior High) and Ryan Syverson (Junior High) will all serve as assistants in the program.

Gullingsrud sees Perham, Breckenridge and DGF as top teams in the HOL, while those three teams are joined by Fergus Falls and East Grand Forks as favorites in Section 8AA.
