Rockets Fall to Ada-Borup in State Football Quarterfinals

The Underwood football team saw their season end on Saturday afternoon in Moorhead as the Ada-Borup Cougars posted a 20-8 victory over the Rockets.

“The coaches are very proud of what this team accomplished this season and would like to thank our senior's for leadership they provided during the season they will be greatly missed next year,” said Underwood Head coach Chuck Ross.  “Thanks to the Underwood fans showed up in great force yesterday and the support they gave us all year long. It's a proud day to be a Rocket!”

Timothy DeVaney gave Underwood an early lead on an 8 yard run at 9:06 of the first quarter and Zane Swanson carried the ball into the end zone for the two-point conversion as the Rockets led 8-0.  Brady Borgen then went 70 yards with the ensuing kickoff and Almir Pinheiro booted the extra point kick to bring the Cougars within a point a 7-6.  A second Ada-Borup TD came with six minutes remaining in the first quarter on a 3-yard run by Verdis Barber, making the score 13-8.

Barber broke loose for a TD run of 91 yards with 5:15 left in the first half and a Pinheiro extra point kick pushed the Cougars lead to 20-8.

Ada-Borup finished the game with 249 yards and Underwood had 227.

Barber led the Cougars with 212 rushing yards on 26 carries. 

Swanson (21 carries, 105 yards) and DeVaney (15 carries, 89 yards) led the Underwood ground attack, and Nik Gardin completed 2-of-5 passes for 31 yards.  Winston Heifort had one catch for 21 yards and Wyatt Thorson caught one pass for 10 yards.

Defensive leaders for Underwood were Thorson with 2 sacks, Slade Moore with 6 solo tackles, 4 assisted tackles and one sack, and Krosby Aasness with an interception.

Underwood finished the season with a record of 9-2.  Their only two losses were to Ada-Borup.
