The volleyball season came to an end for the Henning Hornets on Friday afternoon when they lost a thrilling five-set match to the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars in the consolation semifinal round of the Class A State Tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
B-B-E recorded a 26-24 win in the first set, but Henning turned the tables with a 26-24 win in set two. The Hornets took a 2-1 lead with a 25-18 victory in the third set, however, the Jaguars evened the match with a 25-15 victory in the fourth set. Henning jumped out to leads of 6-1 and 11-7 in the decisive fifth set but couldn’t hold on as the Jaguars finished strong, scoring 8 of the final 9 points in a 15-12 win. Megan Rinicker led the attack for Henning with 16 kills, while adding a solo block and two block assists. Serena Greenwood had 15 kills, Ellie Dague came up with 9 kills and two block assists, and Abi Eckhoff finished with 7 kills. Sydney Eckhoff distributed 46 set assists, had 14 digs and 5 kills. Grace Nyhus had 9 digs and 2 service aces. Ally Hart led the defense with 26 digs and also had a pair of ace serves, while Faith Fisher picked up 14 digs and Kylee Mesker had 11.
Kill leaders for B-B-E were Brittany Berge (16), Grace Illies (11) and Ava Mueller (11). Berge also had 2 solo blocks and 2 block assists, while Karissa Jones had 2 solo blocks and one block assist. Sophomore Libero Emily Kern came up with 33 digs and Illies added 19. Setter Karsee Kampsen delivered 45 set assists, 10 digs and 2 aces serves, and Kylie Winter had 3 ace serves to go along with 13 digs.
The Jaguars will face Greenway for the Class A Consolation title at 9:00am Saturday.
Henning was making their first ever state tournament appearance. They finished the season with a record of 23-7-2.
