The M State Basketball team shot the ball well, took good care of the ball and defended well as they opened their season with a 90-65 home court victory over the Mayville State JV team on Thursday night in Fergus Falls.

The Spartans hit 53.6% (27-69) of their field goal attempts, made 38.5% (10-26) of their 3-point attempts and had only 11 turnovers on the night.

Four of the five starters were in double figures, led by 22 points from Captain Alend Alemadi.  Zakaria Zaid had 17, Jonas Baune 16 and Nic Pearson 12.  Mert Taylor added 9 points and a team high 5 assists.  Renell Edwards led the team with 5 steals and also had 4 assists and 4 rebounds, while Pearson and Baune each grabbed six rebounds.  Baune made all 8 of his field goal attempts.  Alemadi and Zaid chased down 5 rebounds each.

Mayville State JV was led by Brady Waterman with 18 points.  Jake Taggart added 14 point and 5 assists, while Cory Norman finished with 11 points and 9 rebounds.  They hit just 38.3% (23-60) of their shots from the field.

"With some nerves and a slow start it was good to see that this team was willing to fight no matter what situation they faced and their resiliency and perseverance payed off in the end,” said Head Coach Shawn Sorenson of the Spartans.  “Our defense improved throughout the game and that helped our offense get going.  Once we started to take care of the ball and make the extra pass we kept it rolling.  Great team win with balanced scoring and positive energy from all of our players and fans!"
