Fergus Falls Bantam A's Open Season

The VFW Bantam A’s traveled to Sauk Rapids to begin their season on Saturday morning to take on the Sauk Rapids Rice (SRR) Storm.

Fergus Falls got on the board early with an unassisted goal by Isaac Johnson at 2:49 of the opening period. Brayden Nelson scored a power play goal at 8:08 with an assist by Isaac Johnson. Isaac Johnson finished the scoring in the first period with another unassisted goal at 8:26 to put the Otters up 3-0.

In the second period, SRR got on the board at 0:38. SRR followed that with another goal at 11:52 to close the gap to 3-2. At 13:32, Nelson scored his second goal of the game with another assist going to I. Johnson.  The second period ended with the Otters up 4-2.

The third period saw Griffon Babolian find the net unassisted at 1:28. SRR then mounted a comeback attempt by scoring goals at 3:03 and 12:08. When SRR pulled their goalie, Kellen Stenstrom scored an unassisted empty net goal to complete the scoring. Otters win 6-4.

The Otters outshot the Storm 32 to 23. Ben Swanson had 19 saves for the Otters. Fergus Falls has two penalties during the game for a total of four minutes. SRR had eight penalties for a total of sixteen minutes.

Game two on Saturday was in Monticello against the Moose. The Moose scored the first goal of the game at 8:16 of the opening period. Isaac Johnson got the Otters on the board with a power play goal at 10:20 on an assist from Ethan McGuiness. The first period ended in a 1-1 tie.

At 5:39 of the second period, Shane Zierden broke the tie with assists going to Aiden Lindgren and Stenstrom. Dakota Komestakes ended the scoring in the second at 1:27 with a goal and the assist going to Isaac Johnson. Otters lead 3-1.

The third period saw Joey Johnson finding the net at 3:20 with assists going to McGuiness and Jax Katzenmeyer. Stenstrom scored the final goal of the game unassisted at 9:53. Otters win 5-1.

The Otters and the Moose each had 29 shots on goal. Ben Swanson recorded 28 saves. The Moose had three penalties for six minutes. The Otters had two penalties for four minutes.

The VFW Bantam A’s will next play on Saturday, November 16th at River Lakes in Richmond, MN at 11:45 AM. On Sunday, November 17th, The Otters will host Northern Lakes in Fergus Falls at the Community Ice Arena at 1:30 PM. The VFW Bantam A’s are 2-0 to start the season.
