Barnesville compiled 462 (373 rushing, 89 passing) yards of offense on Friday in the Fargodome as they captured the Section 8AA championship with a convincing 65-14 victory over the Pelican Rapids Vikings.  The Trojans built a 51-0 halftime lead on the way to their eleventh straight win.

“Wow what a first half, kids played outstanding and played with so much intensity,” said Barnesville Head Coach Bryan Strand.  “Can't honestly say enough positives about them.  Both sides of the ball as well as the kicking and return game were on par last night.    We hit our 2nd goal and still have another one in our sites, need to stay healthy and continue to improve.  A you can see by our average per rush (15.5) the kids ran hard but the offensive line did another great job opening up some fantastic holes.  Pelican is full of sophomores and juniors so they will be back next year, I congratulate coach Haugen and his staff as well as the kids for a terrific year.  Classy bunch all the way around.”

Adam Tonsfeldt got the Trojans on the board with a 5-yard TD run on their first possession of the game and then added the two-point conversion.  The special teams got into the act, recording a safety when the snap on a punt sailed over the head of the punter and through the end zone.  Tonsfeldt then added his second TD of the first quarter on a 44 yard run to make it 16-0.  Aaron Schiefert went 49 yards for the third Barnesville touchdown and it was 22-0.  Cam Heng found the end zone from 7 yards out and Tonsfeldt ran the conversion in for 30-0 lead after one.

In the second quarter, Tonsfeldt connected with Hunter Zenzen on a 45-yard touchdown pass to increase the lead to 36-0 and Jackson Wahl scored on a one-yard run to push the advantage to 42-0.  A second safety on a bad snap on a punt, added two more points and it was 44-0.  The final first half score came when Hunter Anderson carried the ball in from 19 yards out and Connor Morse booted the extra point kick for a 51-0 lead.

Barnesville notched the first TD of the second half on an 84 yard run by Noah Krause.  The Vikings McHale Korf found the end zone on a 4 yard run, making it a 57-6 game.

Johnny Ziebell scored on a 3-yard run for the Vikings in the fourth quarter and Carter Johnson ran the ball in for the two-point conversion.  Barnesville concluded the scoring with a 38 yard run by Joaquin Nelson and a two-point conversion pass from Maximum Olson to Blake Torfin.

Tonsfeldt had 96 yards on 5 carries and Schiefert had 3 carries for 62 yards.  As a team the Trojans had eleven different players carry the football 24 times for 373 yards, with seven different players finding the end zone for rushing TDs.  Tonsfeldt completed 2-of-3 passes for 89 yards with Hunter Zenzen (1 catch, 45 yards, TD) and Kaden Zenzen (1 catch, 44 yards) on the receiving end of the two completed passes.  Brady Kroll led the defense with a pair of sacks, 2 solo tackles and 11 assists.  Tonsfeldt picked off a pass and fumble recoveries were recorded by Heng and Anderson.  Kroll, Anderson and Joey Mark each caused a fumble in the game.  Tanner Kadrmas added 3 solo tackles and 6 assists.

“Next up is Osakis, excellent team well coached and the best rushing attack I have seen this year,” added Coach Strand.  “Going to be a tough week to prepare for what they want to do, I feel the kids will get it and we will be ready for a battle next weekend at Moorhead.  We gave up 47 yards rushing and 47 yards passing in the first half defensively, again a great effort by our kids.”

The Trojans and Silverstreaks will square off at noon on Saturday, November 9 at the Moorhead High School field.
