Yellowjackets Pull Out 21-20 Win Over DGF in 8AAA Title Tilt

Colton Hackel connected with Noah Rooney on a 30-yard touchdown pass with eleven seconds left in the fourth quarter, tying the game against DGF at 20-20.  Hackel then added the extra point kick, handing the Perham Yellowjackets the Section 8AAA title with a 21-20 win over the top-seeded Rebels.

DGF had broken a 14-14 tie with an impressive 17-play, 82-yard scoring drive, capped by a 3-yard TD run by Justin Wang with just 1:11 remaining in regulation time.  Perham stopped the Rebels two-point conversion try, keeping the margin at six points and setting up their game winning touchdown drive.

Wang scored the first touchdown of the game with 5:01 left in the first quarter on a 10-yard run. Keaton Ring’s PAT kick gave the Rebels a 7-0 lead.  Perham then took the lead on a 5-yard TD run and a two-point conversion run by Hackel with 1:07 to play in the opening quarter.

Wang’s second touchdown came on a one-yard run, capping a 19-play, 91-yard scoring drive with 3:13 left in the second quarter, finishing a drive which last 9-minutes-fifty-four-seconds.  Ring booted the extra point to make it a 14-8 lead for DGF.  Perham pulled even with just 23 seconds remaining in the half when Hackel hooked up with Rooney on a 45-yard pass, putting the score at 14-14 after a failed two-point attempt.

Perham had 262 yards of offense with 202 coming through the air.  Hackel completed 14-of-20 passes and led the Yellowjackets with 33 rushing yards on 14 carries.  Rooney hauled in six passes for 99 yards.  Finn Diggins caught 3 passes for 30 yards, Josh Peterson 3 for 23 yards and Maddux Kovash had 2 receptions for 50 yards.  Rooney led the defense with 8 solo tackles and 5 assists.  Brian Ramos had 6 solo tackles and 4 assists, Rowdie Lindquist contributed 4 solo tackles and 6 assists, and Diggins had the only QB sack.

DGF finished with 323 (215 rushing, 108 passing) total yards.  Wang accounted for 89 rushing yards on 19 carries to lead the Rebels.  Cade Sogge had 65 yards on 17 attempts and Carter Kohler ran for 59 yards on 14 carries.  Kohler also had 3 receptions for 69 yards.  Aiden Leach was 6-for-8 passing the football.  Carter Steen recorded a sack for the Rebels.

Perham will face the winner of the Section 6AAA contests between Albany and Pierz in the Class AAA State Quarterfinals on Saturday, November 9 at noon in Alexandria.
