Perham Boys and Girls Win Section 8A Titles

The Perham Cross Country teams are both headed back to the State Class A Meet as the boys qualified for state for the eighteenth year in a row and the girls for the seventeenth consecutive year.  Should both teams win the state title it would mark the first time ever that a school has recorded three consecutive state titles by both the boys and girls teams.

The boys won the Section 8A title with 22 points.  East Grand Forks was a distant second with 98 points and Frazee took third with 118.

Brandon O’Hara (16:13) and Jakob McCleary (16:21) finished as champion and runner-up, respectively.  Bailey Evenson (16:34) was fourth, Carson Hespe (17:14) seventh and Chase Belka (17:15) eighth.  Tesfaye Young (17:39) placed thirteenth and Owen Werner (17:41) sixteenth, rounding out the Yellowjacket times.

Perham is ranked number one in the final State Cross Country Coaches’ Association Class A Rankings, with West Central Area coming in second.  Emmett Anderson of Staples-Motley is the number one ranked runner in Class A and Jacob Bright of West Central Area is second.  Perham runners Brandon O’Hara and Jakob McCleary are sixth and seventh, respectively.

The Perham girls won with 41 points.  Hawley was second with 105, winning a tie-breaker with United North Central.

Liz Birkeland (19:48) was the top Perham finishing, placing third.  Mya Morris (20:18) took fifth, Quincy Anderson (20:29) was sixth, Kaia Starzl (20:39) took tenth, Lauryn Rustad (21:27) nineteenth and Abby Tweeton (21:28) twentieth.

The Perham girls are at the top of the final State Cross Country Coaches’ Association Class A Rankings, with Staples-Motley second.  Natasha Sortland of Zumbrota-Mazeppa is the top ranked individual in Class A.  Calia Chaney of Pequot Lakes is ranked fifth, Kyanna Burton of Staples-Motley is seventh and Kira Sweeney of Wadena-Deer Creek is tenth.
