The Ashby/Brandon-Evansville Cross Country Teams participated in the Section 6A meet at Pierz on Friday.  Staples-Motley (45) and Albany (58) qualified for state as the top two teams on the girls side and on the boys side, state qualifiers were West Central Area (35) and Staples-Motley (55).  Ashby/Brandon-Evansville was 19th out of 24 boys teams, but did not field a full team for the girls race.

“I think it was a great meet to end the year,” said Head Coach Robert Bosma of Ashby/Brandon-Evansville. “It had to be postponed from Thursday due to flooding on the course and they re-calculated the course to avoid some wet areas. However, I think it worked in our favor as the weather was a perfect day to run.  The guys ran a full squad. Very much like our conference meet, the guys were determined to run hard and score well. They knew it was going to be a fast meet and I cautioned them against going out too fast and losing steam. Most were able to hold back a little to have a strong kick. Many were passing other runners in the last 200 meters of the race. It was great to watch that.”

Wesley Siira (18:47.1) led the way in 47th place, followed by Abram Fossell (19:12.8) in 62nd place and Logan Froemming (19:49.0) in 93rd place.  Blake Merritt (20:13.2) was 111th and Jayden Hoidahl (20:34.1) rounded out the team scoring in 125th place.

“Senior Captain Blake Merritt ran one of his best races this year and you could just feel his determination all week in practice and heading into Friday,” commented Coach Bosma. “He is going to be missed next year as he exemplified what a team leader should be.”

On the girls’ side, Kiatta Korkowski (29:22.1) was the first Brandon-Evansville runner to cross the finish line, followed by Emma Erickson (29:23.1) and Sophia Martin (30:07.6).

“We only had 3 girls running it and they had a goal to stick together and push each other,” said Bosma. “Emma and Sophia were new to CC this year and Kiatta is only an 8th grader, so there was a steep learning curve for them this year. It was great to see them finish the year with a good race to build confidence going into next season.”
