Pelican Rapids hosted Frazee in A Section 8AA high school football semifinal contest on Saturday with the Vikings coming up with sixteen fourth quarter points to overcome a 14-6 deficit and record a 22-14 victory.

“The regular season game was a back and forth high scoring game.  The rematch in the playoffs turned into a defensive struggle.  Both defenses came up with some big plays,” said Pelican Rapids Head Coach David Haugen.

McHale Korf scored on a one-yard run with 6:57 to play in the first quarter, giving the Vikings a 6-0 lead.  With 1:17 left in the opening quarter Frazee took the lead at 7-6 on a one-yard run by Luke Tweeton and an extra point kick by Brandon Nguyen.  An 82-yard touchdown run by Frazee and an extra point kick by Mason Newling increased the Frazee lead to 14-6 just nine seconds into the second half.

Just before halftime Frazee had a first and goal inside the 5 yard line.  They got within inches of the end zone on second down.  Third down was a tackle for loss by linebacker Johnny Ziebell and 4th down was an incomplete pass.

“The defensive stand to end the half was a huge turning point in the game,” noted Haugen.  “It gave us a lot of confidence and momentum going into the second half.  It also kept the game a one possession game with the halftime score of 14-6 in favor of Frazee.”

Eleven seconds into the fourth quarter the Vikings tied the Hornets at 14-14 on a six-yard run by Korf and a his two-point conversion run.  The game winning drive was set up when the Viking defense forced a punt on a three and out series for the Frazee offense.  The touchdown came with just 41 seconds to play in the game when Korf connected with Jayden Rutherford on a 19-yard pass.  Korf again scored the two-point conversion.

“The winning drive was one for the ages,” recounted coach Haugen.  “The drive covered 87 yards, used 18 plays and took just over 8 and a half minutes.  Two fourth down conversions kept the drive alive.  I was really pleased with the composure our team showed on the long drive.  The odds are really against being successful on drives that long.”

The Pelican Rapids defense had to come back on to finish the game and were just good enough as the last play of the game Frazee completed what would have been a touchdown pass, but the receiver came down out of bounds.

Pelican Rapids had 251 (43 passing, 208 rushing) yards of total offense and Frazee finished with 260 (101 passing, 159 rushing).

Korf completed 3-of-13 passes for 43 yards and ran for 77 yards on 20 carries.  Johnny Ziebell had 17 carries for 83 yards to lead the Vikings.  Defensive leaders were Logan Fahje with an interception and Patrick Pechtel with 6 solo tackles and 3 assists.

For Frazee, Cole Fleisher was 6-for-16 throwing the football for 101 yards.  Tweeton ran for 47 yards on 13 carries and Newling hauled in four passes for 71 yards.

Pelican Rapids will now face top-seeded Barnesville for the Section 8AA title at 8:00pm Friday at the Fargodome.
