Cowboys Advance with Convincing Win in 6A Playoffs

The Breckenridge Cowboys opened the Section 6A playoffs with a convincing 46-8 home field win over Pine River-Backus on Tuesday night.  The Cowboys led 24-0 after one quarter, increased their lead to 39-0 at halftime and had a 46-0 lead after three quarters.  Pine River-Backus scored the only eight points of the fourth quarter.

Jacob Vizenor scored the first touchdown of the night on a 31 yard run and Chris Nieto scored the two-point conversion to give the Cowboys an early 8-0 lead.  The second Breckenridge TD came on a 35 yard run by Jack AignerAdam Ohm connected with Tyson Piechowski on the two-point conversion pass to give the Cowboys a 16-0 advantage.  Vizenor scored again, this time on a 30 yard run, followed by a two-point conversion run by Aigner, making the score 24-0 after one quarter.

In the second quarter Daniel Erlandson scored on a 4-yard run and added the two-point conversion as Breckenridge built their lead to 32-0.  Nieto broke free for a 31 yard TD run and Carson Hought booted the extra point kick for a 39-0 halftime lead.

A 14-yard touchdown run by Erlandson and a Hought PAT kick put the Breckenridge lead at 46-0 at the end of the third quarter.

Connor Tulenchik scored the lone TD for Pine River-Backus on a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter.  Rian Struss caught the two-point conversion pass from Jake Poehler to put the final score at 46-8.

Tulenchik led Pine River-Backus with 41 yards rushing on 10 carries.  Poehler completed just 3-of-20 passes for 10 yards.  Pine River-Backus had just 71 yards and 6 first downs on the night.  They were 0-for-11 on third down conversion attempts.

For Breckenridge, Nieto (11 attempts, 159 yards) and Aigner (12 attempts, 129 yards) both broke the century mark in rushing yardage, while Vizenor finished with 93 yards on 9 carries.  Breckenridge had 426 rushing yards on the night and passed for 46 more, giving them 472 total yards.

Breckenridge will travel to Walker on Saturday for a 2:00pm contest against Walker-Hackensack-Akeley in the Section semifinals.
