The Hillcrest football team lost their season finale to Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley on Wednesday night in Fergus Falls, losing by the score of 34-13.

“We started the game fast forcing CGB to punt on their first possession and then scoring on our first possession on a long pass play from Caden Fischer to Thomas Zwiers,” recalled Coach Derrick Clark of the Comets.   “Unfortunately, we had a hard time stopping CGB’s run game from there.  A few costly turnovers and the inability to get our defense off the field cost us in this game.”

Simon Strommen added the extra point kick after that first touchdown and the Comets led 7-0.  C-G-B scored with just sixteen seconds left in the opening quarter on a 2 yard run by Chuck Kleindl, trimming the Hillcrest lead to 7-6.

In the second quarter C-G-B scored on a 60 yard run by Alex Sigler and a two-point conversion run by Nate Moberg, giving the Wolverines a 14-7 advantage with 9:36 left in the half.  At 4:43 Sigler scored on a 3 yard run and then added to two-point conversion to make the score 22-7.  Hillcrest cut the lead to 22-13 when Fischer hit Zwiers for a 47 yard score with 2:32 to play in the half.  With just 33 seconds remaining Kleindl scored on a five yard run, increasing the Wolverines lead to 28-13 at halftime.

A 22 yard run by Moberg with 8:50 left in the fourth quarter put the final score at 34-13.

C-G-B had 329 total yards (323 rushing, 6 passing).  They were led by Moberg (27 carries, 153 yards) and Sigler (16 carries, 126 yards).

Leaders for Hillcrest were Abraham Burleigh (16 carries, 68 yards) and Caden Fischer (12 carries, 43 yards, 9 completions, 18 attempts, 162 yards, 2 TDs).  Zwiers hauled in six passes for 156 yards.  The Comets finished with 269 yards (107 rushing, 162 passing).

Defensive leaders for the Comets were Simon Strommen (17 solo tackles, 2 assisted tackles), Anthony Panza (15 solo tackles, 6 assisted tackles), Gavin Knutson (6 solo tackles, 4 assisted tackles) and Micah Bermel (5 solo tackles).

“I want to make sure to thank our four senior captains and our entire senior class,” said Coach Clark. “We struggled with injuries all year but thanks to the leadership of our seniors we kept fighting the whole season and I’m proud of this team.”
