Border West finished fifth in the Camden Conference Girls Cross Country race held at Stoney Creek Golf Course and hosted by Yellow Medicine East on Tuesday.  The Buccaneers had 125 points.  First place went to Canby with 22 points, followed by Lac Qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd (33), Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (98) and Lakeview (103).

Grace Drietz of Canby/Minneota won the individual title with a time of 19:37.  Second place went to Anika Fernholz of Lac qui Parle Valley with a time of 20:34.   Canby/Minneota runner Braelyn Merritt (20:43) was third.

“We had a great night filled with personal bests despite the cold and windy weather,” commented Border West Head coach Brittany Erickson.  “The meet started off with our Junior High squad setting the tone.  All of them ran personal bests to end their season.  Julia Schmidt captured 2nd in the Junior High girls race helping us win as a team.  Our varsity girls battled against some really impressive runners.  We still had fast times, but our attitude was more competitive.  They chased after girls and tried to stay in contact with runners throughout the race.  Ava Klindworth shined for us.  She had been struggling all season long and last night she broke down some mental barriers and perform extremely well.”

Here are the individual results for Border West:

23. Emily Franzese (24:53), 30. Kilee Blume (26:15), 32. Ava Klindworth (26:27), 37.  Georgia Gallagher (29:12), 38. Lilly Stueve (29:42)

Team results for the boys had Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd first with 20 points, followed by Canby/Minneota (57), Ortonville (101) and Border West (114).  LqPV runners took the first three spots, led by Griffin Johnson (17:10 and Mikey Kvaal (17:10).  Zeke Sather (17:11) was third.

“Our varsity boys picked up right where the girls left off,” said Erickson.  “Six out of the seven runners ran personal bests, some shattering their previous times.  James Drewicke ran another spectacular race by shaving off 25 seconds from Benson where he ran his fastest all year.  Joe Arens missed All Conference by five places.  I have been impressed with all of our varsity boy runners.  They continue to improve and are peaking at just the right time.  They placed fourth overall as a team in a tough conference with 10 teams.  Our JV runners saw some great times too.  Swedlund, Hormann, and Pederson all ran personal bests and Aurora Johnson medaled in the girls race.  I'm extremely proud of everyone's effort.  It made for a fun night.”

Here are the individual results for Border West:

15. Joe Arens 19:18, 22. Derek Lupkes 19:59, 23. Dylan Bainbridge 20:21, 29. Cole Sykora 21:19, 32. Andrew Stueve 21:23, 34. Jens Jorgenson 21:39, 37. James Drewicke 21:50.

“Our next meet is Sections at Pierz,” said Erickson.  “We'll face a lot of adversity--commute time (we travel the farthest of any team), we have never been there so we are not familiar with the course, and our section is always filled with great teams, but despite all that, we have nothing to lose and everything to gain.”

Here are the Ortonville results:

5. Nathan Neu 17:43, 16. Austin Eastman 19:25, 20. Jacob Cloos 19:37, 26. Cody Klepel 20:50, 42. Ian Anderson 23:20, 49. Robert Angelo 26:01
