Verndale Beats Ortonville Behind Five TD's from Craig Orlando

The Verndale Pirates dominated play on Thursday as they hosted Ortonville and recorded a 52-6 win over the Trojans.

Craig Orlando got the Pirates on the board with an 8-yard run at the 7:12 mark of the first quarter.  He also added the two-point conversion run.  Tagen Zepeda then hauled in a 24-yard TD pass from Peter Treinen to draw the Trojans within two points at the 5:25 mark of the opening quarter.  Verndale increased their lead to 16-6 at 3:07 of the period when Craig Orlando scored on a five yard run and Jake Ismil scored the two-point conversion.

At 8:13 of the second quarter Craig Orlando scored on a 2-yard run and added the two-point conversion to make it a 24-6 Verndale lead.  With just 51 seconds left in the half Craig Orlando scored his fourth touchdown of the night on a 5-yard run, giving Verndale a 30-6 halftime advantage.

Zak Olsson started the second half by returning the kickoff 85 yards to the end zone, and when Craig Orlando hauled in the two-point conversion pass from Dilan Orlando, Verndale had 38-6 lead.  Craig Orlando’s fifth TD of the game at 9:35 of the third, and his fourth two-point conversion run added eight more to the lead, making the score 46-6.

The final touchdown of the night came with just two seconds left in the game when Ben Brownlow scored on a one-yard run.

Craig Orlando finished the game with 120 rushing yards on 19 carries and Brownlow had 71 yards on 10 rushing attempts.  Verndale had 271 rushing yards and 283 total yards.  Defensively, Ismil and Brownlow each intercepted a pass.  The Pirates held the Trojans to 166 yards of offense.
