Hillcrest Lutheran Academy lost 36-0 to a big and physical Bertha Hewitt team on Thursday night.

“A slow start doomed us again and we weren’t able to climb out of an early hole,” reported Hillcrest Head Coach Derrick Clark.  “We weren’t able to get any offense going in the wet conditions and struggled to find our rhythm.”

Hillcrest had only 45 total yards and Bertha-Hewitt had 268 yards, all on the ground. They were led by 100 yards on 5 carries from Conner Bertram.  Chris Bostic had 60 yards on 18 carries, Carter Perlinger finished with 58 yards on 3 attempts and Cameron Mitchell ran for 45 yards on 4 carries.

The Comets had five turnovers, four fumbles and an interception.  Caden Fischer threw the ball nine times, completing three passes for 26 yards and ran for 25 yards on 6 carries.  Abe Burleigh had one catch for 12 yards.

Defensively, the Comets were led by Simon Strommen’s 13 tackles and Jaxen Swedenburg had a fumble recovery.

The Bears scored 30 points in the first quarter, starting with a 45 yard run by Perlinger less than a minute into the game.  On the ensuing kickoff, a fumble by the Comets was scooped up and returned for a touchdown by Conner Bertram.  The two-point conversion run by Perlinger made it a 14-0 lead for the Bears.  At 10:41 of the opening quarter, Bertram broke free for a 34-yard TD run and Kenny Hegarty ran in for the two-point conversion to make it 22-0.  With just 2:45 remaining in the quarter Perlinger ran the ball in from ten yards out and Chris Bostic added the two-point conversion run.

The final score of the game came on a 54 yard run by Bertram less than a minute into the second half.
