The M State lady Spartans lost the first two sets of their match in St. Cloud on Wednesday night, losing to the Cyclones 25-22 and 25-19, however, they turned things around and finished strong, winning the final three sets 25-14, 25-21 and 20-18 to win the match 3-2.

“We had moments during the first two sets where we would get going on some good runs, but it happened at points where it was too late,” said head volleyball coach Abby Crowser. “Before the third set, we emphasized that we absolutely had to start playing together as a team, play smart and control our side of the net. There were no more chances to figure it out, it had to happen now.  Everyone agreed and we were a different team for the rest of the match. The fifth set was so intense back and forth, but it was the team’s mental toughness and team work that made the win possible.”

Leaders for M State were Katherine Mastey 920 kills, 2 blocks, 8 digs), Hannah Ekse (11 kills, 3 blocks, 3 digs), Sydney Hovland (41 set assists, 16 digs, 7 kills, 2 blocks, 11/13 serving), Bailey Marty (38 digs, 15/16 serving, 3 aces), Alexis Heisler (16 digs, 12/13 serving), Alexa Mortenson (6 kills, 8 digs, 2 blocks, 20/21 serving, 4 aces), Taylor Berndt (16 digs, 21/22 serving, 1 ace) and Sierra Jenson (11 digs, 21/23 serving, 2 aces).  The Spartans served 92.6% (100/108) as a team in the match.

M State (17-3, 7-2 MCAC South) will play at Western Technical College in Wisconsin on Friday night and at Rochester Community and Technical College on Saturday afternoon, before returning home for their final three matches of the regular season.
