Jacob Vizenor got things off to a good start for the Breckenridge Cowboys on Wednesday night in Crookston when he returned a punt 76 yards for a touchdown less than three minutes into the game.  The Cowboys went on to post a 26-13 victory over the Pirates with Vizenor intercepting a pair of Leyton Salentine passes and hauling in a 39 yard TD pass from Cooper Yaggie with just 1:26 to play to put the game out of reach.

After Vizenor’s punt return, Crookston took a 7-6 lead on a nineteen yard TD pass from Salentine to Quinn Westlake and an extra point kick by Brooks Butt.

Breckenridge regained the lead when Daniel Erlandson scored on a one yard run after the Crookston punt team fumbled a high snap, turning the ball over near their own goal line.  Erlandson’s touchdown and a two-point conversion run by Chris Nieto gave the Cowboys a 14-7 lead, however, on the ensuing kickoff Ty Hamre went 72 yards for a TD, drawing Crookston to within a point at 14-13 with 1:26 left in the first half.

The Cowboys received the second half kickoff and proceeded to go 57 yards in eleven plays, using 5:27 of the third quarter clock before scoring on a ten-yard pass from Yaggie to Jace Jensen, increasing their lead to 20-13.

Vizenor’s first interception stopped a long drive by the Pirates and his return to the Crookston 35-yard line setup the final touchdown of the night.

The Cowboy defense was outstanding all night long, holding Crookston to 7 first downs on 151 yards (91 rushing, 60 passing) of total offense.  Ethan Boll led the Pirates with 53 rushing yards on 15 carries and Westlake caught three passes for 63 yards.  Salentine completed 5-of-13 passes.

Breckenridge finished with 167 rushing yards and 55 passing yards for a total of 222 yards.  They also had 13 first downs.  Jack Aigner ran the ball 16 times for 106 yards and Vizenor had 51 yards rushing on six carries.  Yaggie was 3-for-7 throwing the football for 55 yards. The Cowboys had some trouble holding onto the football as the fumbled four times, losing two of them.  Defensively, Connor Twidwell and Jared Aamold each had a sack and Jonah Christensen recovered a fumble.

Breckenridge (4-3) will finish their regular season with a road game at Red Lake Falls next Wednesday at 6:00pm.
