The West Central Area cross country teams competed in Litchfield on Saturday with the Knights taking second place behind a very solid Hopkins team in the boys’ race and the girls placing tenth.

“The race course had to be changed to mostly a road race in Litchfield because of the amount of rain they have been getting so it was fast and flat,” reported WCA Head Coach John VanKempen.  “It was a new experience for us in Litchfield against many teams that we usually don’t get to compete against throughout the season.”

The boys were led by Jacob Bright, who again set a school record, finishing the 5k in 15:25 and beating his previous school record by a few seconds and winning the race in comfortable fashion.  Next was Jack Van Kempen in 8th, Alex Salwasser in 10th, Kade Runge in 14th, Kyle Schill in 29th, Shad Swanson in 50th and Peyton Hanson in 109th.  “Peyton finished the race in 19:15 on a sprained ankle,” noted VanKempen.  “Shad was just under 19 minutes for his new personal record.  We are approaching our last few meets of the season and look forward to seeing if we can meet our individual and team goals.”

The girls were in 10th, led by Lexi Bright in 25th, Teagan Nelson in 26th, Brynn Fernholz in 57th, Taylor Bennet in 60th, Alexa Blume in 87th and Brooklyn Runge in 122nd.  “Taylor has been racing well and gaining more confidence in her abilities,” observed Coach VanKempen.

The boys’ junior high placed 4th with Jack Courier leading the way for us and finished in 4th.  It was his best race of the season.  He was followed closely by Bryce Kjesbo in 16th, Camden Anderson in 19th, Ben Bye in 29th, and Connor Friedl in 92nd.  The girls junior high only had two, with Blair Reuter in 21st and Stephanie Reeves in 68th.  The girls’ JV had Quin Huntley in 163rd and Bella Hale in 156th.

The boys’ Junior Varsity finished in 6th place with Reubens Swanson in 5th, Dane Anderson in 33rd, Roman Mihailovschi in 52nd, Eli Bergman in 59th, Tyler Biss in 154th and Parker Mathews in 192nd.  “It was a big race and our boys JV ran tough with most setting personal records for the season,” added VanKempen.
