The Pelican Rapids football team snapped a two-game losing skid with a 45-36 home field win over Frazee on Friday night.

The Hornets struck first when Broden Fleisher ran the ball in from 35 yards out with 7:34 to play in the first quarter.  Pelican Rapids took an 8-6 lead on a five yard run by McHale Korf and a two-point conversion run by Korf at 3:35 of the quarter.  With 31 seconds left in the first, Frazee scored on a 14 yard TD pass from Cole Fleisher to Broden Fleisher.  Luke Tweeton added the two-point conversion, giving Frazee a 14-8 lead after one quarter.

Matt Ziebell tied the game on a 3-yard run with 5:25 left in the first half.

A 73 yard kick-off return by Jayden Rutherford to start the second half put Pelican Rapids ahead 20-14 and Korf added the two-point conversion.  Ziebell scored his second TD of the night on a one yard run with 3:51 left in the third quarter and Korf connected with Logan Fahje on a two-point conversion pass to increase the Vikings lead to 30-14.  Frazee cut the lead to 30-22 with eleven seconds left in the quarter when Cole Fleisher completed a two-point conversion pass.

Ziebell’s third TD of the night came at 7:26 of the fourth quarter from 5 yards out.  Johnny Ziebell then hooked up with McHale Korf on the two-point conversion pass to give Pelican a 38-22 advantage.  Frazee responded at 4:12 with a six-yard touchdown pass from Cole Fleisher to Mason Newling.  That duo also got together on the two-point conversion, bringing the Hornets wo with 38-30. At 1:27 the Vikings put the game away on Ziebell’s fourth TD run of the night, this one from the 3-yard line.  The extra point kick by Liam Sytsma made it 45-30.  The Hornets weren’t done yet as Cole Fleisher hit Broden Fleisher with an 18-yard strike with just 33 second remaining, making the final score 45-36.

“We had another back and forth game that wasn't decided until the very end,” explained Head Coach David Haugen of the Vikings. “We were able to come up with the big plays tonight.  Trailing by 6 in the second quarter we pulled up a fake punt facing a 4th and 23.  The pass from McHale Korf to Logan Fahje covered 48 yards and got us to the 3 yard line.  Matty Ziebell scored on the next play and the teams went into halftime tied. The second half started with the next big play for us with Jayden Rutherford returning the kick off for a touchdown.

We never trailed or were even tied after that touchdown put us up 8 but we couldn't put them away.  Frazee was able to get some big plays through the passing game.  Defensively we were able to come up with enough plays and our ability to run the ball and keep the clock moving once we had the lead was huge in us being able to come away with the win.”

Both teams piled up a lot of yardage as Frazee finished with 357 (186 passing, 171 rushing) and Pelican Rapids had 346 (143 passing, 203 rushing).  The two teams combined for 45 first downs.

Leaders for Pelican Rapids were Korf (6 completions, 13 attempts, 143 yards, 11 carries, 57 yards), Matt Ziebell (17 carries, 70 yards) and Johnny Ziebell (14 carries, 68 yards).  Logan Fahje had a team high 3 receptions for 64 yards.  Johnny Ziebell (8 solo tackles, 2 assists) and Matt Ziebell (5 solo tackles, 7 assists) were the defensive leaders for the Vikings.

Broden Fleisher led Frazee with 104 receiving yards on 8 catches, and Cole Fleisher completed 15-of-23 passes for 186 yards and 4 TD passes.  Caleb DeGroat led the running attack with 55 yards on 11 carries and Luke Tweeton added 55 yards on 11 attempts.
