The Brandon-Evansville volleyball team battled through five sets before putting away the Underwood Rockets in a highly competitive Little Eight Conference matchup on Thursday night in Evansville.  The Chargers won 25-15, 25-16, 23-25, 25-27, 15-7.

“After two tough matches earlier in the week we knew that we had to be on top of our game against a program like Underwood,” commented B-E Head Coach Kelly Olson.  “For the first two sets we had everything rolling.  We passed and served well, and we covered up any mistakes we had.  Moving into the third set we again started the set off strong but we didn't carry that momentum through to 25.  Instead it looked like we started reaching during passing and Underwood started to bring a lot of energy to the court.  It was back and forth that whole set after they caught up, and with a hitting error giving them the set, we went to set four.  Set four saw us again establish a good start to the set, but a lot like set three, we bogged down and Underwood kept coming at us.  A few missed serves and a communication issues saw us drop the fourth set 25-27.  Whenever you have to go to a fifth set it really tests a teams mental toughness, because anything can happen.  It was nice to get a side out off their tough leadoff server before she ran a bunch on us like she had all night.  Brittany Korkowski went back and really served well that fifth set.  We seemed to regain some momentum from that start and carried it through the last point, winning 15-7.  The girls played hard, and they needed to.  Underwood is always a tough match, and tonight it was no different.  They knew it was our Senior Night, and they played some resilient volleyball.  I think we got better tonight in a number of ways and are looking forward to heading to Marshall for a two day tournament starting Friday night and ending Saturday afternoon.”

The Chargers were led by Bailey Schaefer (19 kills, 12 digs, 1 block, 4 aces), Kailee Klimek (14 kills, 6 digs, 1 ace), Kristen Kokett (23 digs), Korkowski (10 digs, 2 blocks, 4 kills, 2 aces), Mikenna Pattrin (9 kills, 2 blocks) and Korrie Randt (41 set assists, 5 digs, 1 block, 2 aces).

Kayla Rocholl had a good night serving for the Rockets going 20/20 with 4 aces, Reese Richards added 35 set assists, Brooke Hovland led the offense with 17 kills, Ally Johnson had 3 stuff blocks and Kayla Rocholl added 18 digs to lead the defense.

“After a slow start, I was really proud of the girls for pulling together and putting up a good fight,” stated Underwood Head Coach Diane Ross.  “B-E has some powerful hitters and in set 3 we started getting touches on the block and we were digging much better than the first 2 sets.  We made some errors in set 5 that we couldn't overcome, and the ball rolled B-E's way. But overall it was a very competitive match and a good experience for our team. We are 5-3 in the conference and 8-7 overall.  We travel to Perham on Saturday for the KLN tourney.”
