The Fergus Falls girls’ soccer team played at Rocori on Tuesday and returned home with a 6-3 win in overtime.

Rocori scored the first goal on a break at the 32 minute mark, but the Otters tied the game on a penalty kick by Ellie Andersen at 17 minutes.

“We came out and were just booting the ball anywhere and everywhere and the score was tied at 1-1 at halftime,” said Head Coach Ben Jurgens of the Otters.  “We made some adjustments at halftime and the girls started collecting the ball, looking up, and passing it to the feet and space.  We were able to get up 3-1, unfortunately, with three minutes to go in the game a fluke goal went in and our Keeper Svea Smestad injured her ankle.  Rocori quickly scored again and we were headed to overtime.”

Ellie scored from 25 yards out at the 37 minute mark of the second half and Anna Anderson scored at 21 minutes on a penalty kick to give Fergus Falls a 3-1 lead.  Rocori scored at the five minute mark and the three minute mark to pull even.

Talia Nelson ended up with the game winner as she pounded the ball through traffic to beat the goalie in the first overtime.

“In the second session of overtime Piper Andrews took over scoring her first goal of the game near the end line,” commented Coach Jurgens.  “Her second came on a long run carrying the ball through traffic and ripped it into the corner of the net.  The girls didn’t panic.  We didn’t play great in the first half but played better and better as the game went on.  I am proud of their mental toughness.  Our biggest concern is the health of our goal keeper Svea Smestad.  She is our rock back there so we will wait and see.”
