Pirates Improve to 4-1 with Win Over Bertha-Hewitt

The Verndale Pirates hosted Bertha-Hewitt on Friday night in a high school football contest which the Pirates won by the score of 38-14.  Verndale jumped out to a 14-0 lead after one quarter, increased the lead to 30-8 at the half and after a scoreless third quarter they outscored the Bears 8-6 in the fourth.

Craig Orlando hauled in an 8 yard scoring pass from Dilan Orlando at 8:06 of the first quarter and the Pirates took an 8-0 lead after a two-point conversion run by Jake Ismil.  At 3:22 of the first, Ismil broke free for a 25 yard TD run to make it a 14-0 game.

Bertha-Hewitt got on the board at the ten minute mark of the second quarter when Connor Bertram scored on a 59 yard run and then carried the ball over the goal line for the two-point conversion to cut the Verndale lead to 14-8.  The Pirates got those eight points back on a five yard run by Craig Orlando and Ismil’s two-point conversion run, and then added eight more points with 1:26 left in the first half when Zak Olsson caught a 47 yard TD pass from Dilan Orlando and Ismil again scored the two-point conversion.

Bertha-Hewitt scored at 10:55 of the fourth on a 4-yard run by Bertram and Verndale finished the scoring at 8:27 of the fourth when Craig Orlando scored on a 3-yard run and Ismil was on the receiving end of the two-point conversion pass from Dilan Orlando.

Bertha-Hewitt had 249 rushing yards on 49 carries and Verndale finished with 288 (187 rushing, 101 passing) total yards on the night.

Individual leaders for Verndale were Ismil (15 carries, 82 yards), Gideon Ervasti (11 carries, 57 yards), Olsson (3 catches, 89 yards) and Dilan Orlando (5 completions, 12 attempts, 94 yards).  Brandon Greenwaldt and Dilan Orlando each had a pass interception for the Pirates.
