M State freshmen Grant Inniger and John Vall finished runner-up and 3rd, respectively, with scores of 75 and 76.  Wyatt Blomseth (77) and Carter Justesen (79) also carded scores in the 70’s.  Trevor Dalbec rounded out the Spartans scoring with an 82.

“On the men’s side it was a bittersweet day,” said M State Head Coach Jason Retzlaff.  “I thought we showed a lot of positive signs and put up a nice score today.  Four scores in the 70’s is always nice as well. As competitors, it grinds on us a bit to come up a single shot short against a very good Valley City State golf program.  It’s the first of numerous tournaments we will have against 4 year colleges and will no doubt serve us well to play such quality opponents.  I was very happy with the play of Grant Inniger and John Vall today.  It was fantastic to have our freshmen play as well as they did leading the way for us. It is the start of a lot of great golf they will play for the Spartans.”

On the women’s side, Valley City State had the only complete team score with a 352.  Hayley Shanks of Valley City was the medalist with an 83.  Taren Braunberger (88), Jocelyn Braunberger (90) and Maddie Wilkie (91) all contributed to the team score.

The Spartans Carley Baumann shot a 95.

“Carley Baumann had a very nice round us,” said Coach Retzlaff.  “She got off to a slow start but hit a lot of nice shots-including a chip in for birdie on the ninth hole.  She will continue to get better throughout the fall.”

The Spartans will next compete on Monday and Tuesday at the University of Jamestown Fall Classic.  It is a two day event that will take place at Crossroads Golf Club in Carrington, ND.
