Barnesville needed four sets to close out the Hawley Nuggets in a Little Eight Conference volleyball match on Thursday night.  The Trojans won 19-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-20.

“Well… it was a great night to get back on the volleyball court tonight,” commented Head Coach Megan Askegaard of the Trojans. “We have been off for a week and half and the girls were more than ready for this conference match up with the Nuggets. I thought we came off pretty flat tonight from where our intensity level should have been. We allowed the Hawley attackers to come at us from all angles on the court and we didn’t make any quick adjustments. They have a strong middle hitter (Paige Thompson) who attacks hard and straight to the 10 foot line and our block was late or we weren’t ready to dig up a tip. The girls made some great adjustments on their defense and did a better job anticipating where that ball was going to go. We needed to pay more attention to the hitters arm than we were in the first set. I am proud of my blockers adjustment as they were able to get more touches on the ball later in the match. Our defense is definitely what keeps up going. We have some strong attackers that are fueled by the plays that come from the backcourt. Emily Condon did an excellent job reading their hitters and picking up many balls that were coming to her area. Set 4 did not start out in our favor and we found ourselves stuck in serve receive and making too many errors passing and attacking. We ended up getting the ball back and then tried to make a run when the roof started leaking (pouring) in the backcourt. We ended up moving the game to our OLD gym to finish. The atmosphere in there was electric and it is a memory that the girls and fans will never forget. We played smart and remembered that this game is always a marathon, not a sprint and we were able to push to 25.”

Barnesville statistical leaders were Sam Passa (11 kills, 16/16 serving, 17 digs), Lexi Bolgrean (6 kills, 14/15 serving, 23 digs), Kim Maesse (20 set assists 24/25 serving, 1 ace, 14 digs), Jordan Tschumperlin (6 kills, 5 digs, 1 solo block, 2 assisted blocks) and Condon (43 digs, 8/9 serving, 1 ace) and Katie Newell (10/11 serving, 1 ace, 11 set assists).
