Yellowjackets Hold Off Cowboys for 16-13 Opening Night Win

The Perham Yellowjackets and Breckenridge Cowboys squared off in a Heart O’ Lakes Conference football game on Friday night with Perham coming out on top by the score of 16-13.

The Cowboys scored first when they ended a 9 play, 74-yard scoring drive with a one yard run by Daniel Erlandson with 8:38 remaining in the first quarter.  Cooper Yaggie tacked on the extra point to give the home team an early 7-0 lead. Perham responded with a 48 yard TD pass to Dylan Lysne from Colton Hackel with 5:07 left in the first.  Dawson Kellogg ran the ball in for the two-point conversion and the Yellowjackets grabbed an 8-7 lead.  Perham increased their lead to 16-7 at 9:06 of the second quarter when Hackel scored on an 18 yard run and Finn Diggins accounted for the two-point conversion.

The Cowboys cut the lead to 16-13 on a 19 yard run by Jack Aigner with just 1:19 to play in the third quarter.  Aigner’s score came on the twelfth play of an 89 yard scoring drive, however, the extra point kick by Yaggie was blocked.

Breckenridge (248 rushing yards, 144 passing yards, 392 total yards, 23 first downs) put up good offensive numbers on the night.  They were led by Erlandson (15 carries, 100 yards), Aigner (14 carries, 97 yards), Yaggie (6-12 passing, 144 yards) and Jase Jensen (3 receptions, 79 yards).

Perham had 156 yards rushing and 150 passing yards for a total of 306 yards of offense.  Kellogg led the Yellowjackets with 72 yards on 19 carries and Hackel ran for 62 yards on 16 attempts, while completing 9-of-24 passes.  Lysne was the top receiver, hauling in three passes for 105 yards.
