Rick Harig is in year number sixteen as head coach of the Bertha-Hewitt football team.  In 2019 the Bears return seven starters.  Among their losses to graduation were All-District Special Teams Player of the Year Devin Dean who is playing at Augsburg University, All-District and All-Section linebacker Travis Sakry and Dominick Shesta (OL/DE).  Harig will be assisted by Mark Frethem and Steve Pauly.

Returning starters are senior Rick Harig (TE/DL), Kenny Hegarty (WR/CB), Derik Kimber (LB), Carter Perlinger (FB/DL) and Cody Shamp (FS), and juniors Austin Bauch (OL/DL) and Hunter Dean (LB).

“We are returning a few key starters and need our incoming seniors and juniors to step into starting roles,” explained Coach Harig.  “We return size up front and have some younger skill players.  Hopefully, we mesh early in the season.  Our JV last season was undefeated so we are counting on those players to take the next step into varsity competition.”

Players competing for varsity playing time include seniors Conner Bertam (RB/LB) and Ethan Sakry (OL/DL), and juniors Tyler Eggert (OL/DL) and Hayden Captain (TE/LB).

According to Coach Harig, Verndale and Brandon-Evansville are the teams to beat in Section 4 of 9-man.
