The Breckenridge Post 53 American Legion baseball team is competing in the Division II State Tournament in Ely this weekend.  Post 53 will open play Friday at 12:30pm against Plato.  Two other Section 8AA teams, Wadena and DGF have also qualified for the Division II Tournament, while yet another 8AA team, East Grand Forks has advanced to the State Division I Tournament.

Breckenridge won their West Central North pod by defeating PRBA 5-1. Then they defeated Parkers Prairie twice by a score of 4-3, coming from behind in both games to take the lead in the 6th inning.

They were the number one seed going into West Central sub-state play and defeated Morris 11-1 in 6 innings, defeated Osakis 2-1 again coming from behind scoring 2 runs in the 6th to take the lead, and then beat Osakis in the championship game 6-0 to win the West Central Sub-state, qualifying for state.

“This is the first time Breckenridge has been to the state tournament since 1973 and the first time ever since there has been two divisions,” reported Head Coach Kevin Hiedeman.  “Of the seven teams that earned their way to the state tournament, two of them are in the Minnesota Lakes Conference with us and DGF.  Our area teams have done extremely well this summer.”
