On Thursday night at American Legion Field at DeLagoon Park in Fergus Falls the 15U Otters persevered and won in walk-off fashion, 5-4 in extra innings over the PRBA Titans from the Prairie River Baseball Association (formerly BE/WCA).

The Otters struck first in the top of the 1st when Taeren Holdeman walked and later scored on an Andrew Johnson RBI single. Cole Wentworth followed with a sharp single, and before another pitch was thrown, Johnson scampered home when Cole Wentworth broke early from first, and stayed in a run-down long enough for Johnson to cross home plate taking an early 2-0 lead.

The Otters added a run in the bottom of the second when Bailey Culbertson singled and later scored when Justis Sagerhorn earned an RBI on a fielder’s choice.

PRBA manufactured runs in the 4th and 5th innings off of timely hitting and solid base running.  With two outs in the 4th, PRBA got back to back singles from Kyle Schaffran and Hunter Koep leading to the Titan’s first run of the game.

After the Otters went down in order in the bottom of the 4th, the Titan’s Trent Koloski and Jayden Hoidahl set the table in the top of 5th with back to back bloop singles to right field.  With one out Isaac Kreft singled and Jake Strunk doubled and when the dust settled, 3 runs scored, giving the Titan’s their first lead of the night at 4-3.

Not willing to go down without a fight, the Otters battled back in the bottom of the 6th. A one out single by Cole Wentworth was followed by a clutch RBI double by Bailey Culbertson, tying the game a 4 runs apiece.

The score would remain tied through 8 2/3 innings as neither team was able to score a run until the Otters came back to the plate in the bottom of the 9th inning.  With Michael DeBrito leading off, he worked a full count before getting hit by a pitch, earning the free pass. Adam King laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt and the Otters were in business with DeBrito on second and one out.  It looked like it was over when Holdeman stroked a line drive to the right side, but Koep snagged it at first base and denied Holdeman of a game winning hit. With two outs, Carter Thielke came to the plate with a chance to end it.  He was up to the task when he hit a single between short and third, allowing DeBrito to score the winning run in walk-off fashion.

Kaden Conklin had another quality performance with 5 innings on the mound, allowing 4 runs, 6 hits, striking out 2, and walking 1.  Carter Thielke earned the win providing 4 scoreless innings of relief, allowing 0 runs, 3 hits, striking out 3, and walking 1.

Bailey Culbertson and Cole Wentworth led the Otters at the plate each going 2 for 4.  Thielke,  Holdeman, and Johnson also had hits in the game.

Titans Pitchers Tyler Bitzan (6 innings) and Trent Koloski (2 ⅔ innings) combined for 8 2/3  innings of work on the mound, allowing only 7 hits and 5 runs, striking out 11 Otters, while walking only 2.

Hunter Koep and Trent Koloski each went 2 for 4, leading the PRBA Titans 9 hit attack.

The Otters improve to 11-2 and will face Detroit Lakes at home on Monday, July 1st.
