Hurricanes Take Fourth at Elrosa Tournament

The Fergus Falls Hurricanes finished fourth at the Elrosa Elite 8 Tournament over the weekend.  The ‘Canes won their first game, 4-2 over the Tri-City Sharks, then dropped a 7-5 decision to the Sartell Muskies before losing the third place game to the Elrosa Saints, 2-1.

 

In the Saturday win over Tri-City, Thomas Bosek (7IP, 12K, 6BB, 4H, 2ER) struck out twelve batters in going the distance to earn the victory on the mound.  Tri-City struck first with a run in the top of the first inning.  Soren Roe led off with a single, moved to second on a walk to Seth Miller and then scored on a base hit by Steve Kleppen.  Fergus Falls tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second.  Jack Hiedeman singled and scored on a 2-out double by Alex Hexum.  Tri-City took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when Matt Tetrick delivered a bases loaded single with two outs, scoring Seth Miller.  Fergus Falls scored twice in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead.  With one out Bosek singled, Tosten Mann singled and an error by the right fielder allowed Bosek to score the tying run and Mann to reach third base.  Mann then scored on a sacrifice fly by Hiedeman.  Fergus Falls added an insurance run in the sixth when Jake Anderson singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Eric Salvesen and scored on a double by Hexum.

The loss to Sartell occurred later on Saturday as the Muskies scored all seven of their runs in the first three innings.  Fergus Falls committed six errors in the game, leading to three unearned runs.  Pete Gaustad (7IP, 5K, 5BB, 6H, 7R, 4ER) took the loss.  Leading hitters for Fergus Falls were Tosten Mann (2-4, HR, 2R, 2RBI), Thomas Bosek (2-4, R. RBI) and Gaustad (1-3, 2B, BB, 2RBI).  Tim Burns launched a two-run home run in the first inning to get the scoring started for the Muskies.

In the third place game the Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning.  Sean McGuire singled and was sacrificed to second by Bosek.  Darin Stanislawski then drove in the run with a base hit.  McGuire was 3-for-4 with a runs scored and Dan Revering had two hits in three at bats.  Elrosa tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single by James Kueffler and scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out single by Matt Schmitz, scoring Brady WellerEric Salvesen (6.2IP, 12K, 0BB, 8H, 2R, 1ER) took the loss in a complete game effort.  Reliever Preston Van Beck (2IP, 3K, 0BB, 2H, 0R) was the winning pitcher for the Saints.  Starting pitcher Aaron Vogt went five innings, allowing 5 hits and one earned run.
