New York Mills Finishes Fourth at Class A State Softball Tournament

The two time defending champion New York Mills Eagles had to settle for a fourth place finish at the 2019 MSHSL Class A State Softball Tournament.

Top-seeded New York Mills defeated South Ridge, Culver 6-1 in the quarterfinal round of the 2019 MSHSL Class A State Softball Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Caswell Park. The Panthers from South Ridge opened the quarterfinal matchup scoring one run on two hits. The Eagles of New York Mills knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning on a single hit to left field. The Eagles scored two more in the bottom of the second to take the 3-1 lead over the Panthers. New York Mills kept the Panthers off the board for the remainder of the contest while scoring three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Tiffany Thompson led the charge for the Eagles going 3 for 3, scoring 2 runs. Assisting Thompson in the win was the first baseman, Grace Christenson going 3 for 4 and tallying 2 RBI. Thompson threw a complete game in the circle allowing the one run on four hits and collecting 8 strikeouts. Malania Madill takes the loss for South Ridge giving up 6 runs on 10 hits. New York Mills advanced to the semifinal round facing Badger/Greenbush-Middle River on Thursday.

In the final game of day one at Caswell Park of the 2019 MSHSL State Softball Tournament, the Gators from Badger/Greenbush-Middle River defeated the 8-4 to advance to the championship final on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The Gators were led by Lauren Kvien who went 3 for 3 with a one-run, 2 RBI and a solo homer. Kvien had some assistance from Ella Heggedal who went 2 for 3 with 2 runs and Jacey Wojchowski who went 2 for 4 with 4 RBI. Three players from the Eagles hit doubles in the semifinal game, with Sierra Gerber tallying 3 RBI and a walk going 1 for 2. Mariah Christian pitched the complete game for the Gators allowing 4 runs on 9 hits, walking 2 and striking out 2. In the circle for New York Mills was Tiffany Thompson who gave up 7 earned runs and struck out 3. The Gators face the Flying Dutchmen from Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian in the championship game while the Eagles look to take home the Class A third-place trophy facing the Randolph Rockets at 11 a.m. on Friday.

The No. 2 seed Randolph Rockets defeated the Eagles 16-3 to claim the 2019 MSHSL Class A State Softball Third Place Title on Friday afternoon at Caswell Park. The Rockets wasted no time putting up 14 runs in the first three innings. The Eagles found it in them in the bottom of the third posting four runs in the inning but unable to cut the deficit. The Rockets center fielder, Meredith Taylor led the way in the third-place game going 2 for 4 with 4 RBI and 2 runs. Taylor had some assistance in the runs category with Maddie Dibble bringing in 4 runs and Andrea Splichal tallying 3 RBI. In total, the Rockets combined for 16 runs on 13 hits with 11 RBI and eight different players scoring runs. For the Eagles, the pitching duo of Tiffany Thompson and Karli Kawlewski were hot at the plate both going 2 for 3 with 1 run apiece.
