Perham’s O’Hara Leads Local Competitors at State Track and Field Meet

Perham junior distance runner Brandon O’Hara recorded his personal best time in the 3200 meter run (9:35.80) on Friday at Hamline University, as he finished as runner-up in the finals of that event.  O’Hara cut nearly ten seconds off his previous best time.

 

Jacob McCleary of the Yellowjackets qualified for the Saturday finals race in the 800 meter run, turning in a ninth place finish with a time of 1:58.65. Isaac Scheidecker failed to qualify in the 110 hurdles (15.93) and Colton Koystynick did not place in the shot put.  Liz Birkeland did not qualify for finals in the 3200 (11:56.40) as she had the twelfth fastest qualifying time.  Mesa Schultz did not place in the long jump, the 4 x 100 relay team just missed advancing, claiming tenth place, and the 4 x 200 relay team was disqualified due to a lane violation.  The Yellowjackets will be following the pole vault closely as they have section record holder Ashley Hokanson and Shalie Lipp competing in that event.  Caitlin Covington will run in the 1600 and Perham will also have their 4 x 800 relay team of Lacy Richter, Liz Birkeland, Caitlin Covington and Hailey Wegscheid running on Saturday.

 

The Frazee Hornets qualified two girls and one boy for finals in the hurdles.  Jaryn Johansen (15.56) and Paige Ziegler (15.60) qualified fourth and sixth, respectively.  The Hornets failed to advance their 4 x 200 relay team as their time was tenth in the race.  Joby Geifer of Frazee ended up sixth (15.50) in the 110 hurdles, advancing to Saturday’s finals.

 

Pelican Rapids senior Eli Sytsma was seventh in the triple jump (42-10.00) and Tatianna Wiley advanced to the finals with a fourth place (58.38) in the 400 meter dash.  The 4 x 400 relay team of Maddie Guler, Abby Syverson, Anna Stephenson and Chloe Paulson qualified with a third place finish (3:59.28).

 

Ottertail Central qualified their 4 x 200 relay team of Erika Heibel, Brooke Hovland, Kylie Frederick and Grace VanErp with a time of 1:47.87 and an eighth place finish in the prelims.  Jorja Gabrielson was tenth (2:20.85) in the 800 and will not compete in the finals on Saturday.  Grace VanErp will be in the triple jump on Saturday. The Bulldogs also did not qualify their 4 x 400 relay team for the finals.  Nick Van Erp was twelfth in the 200 meter dash, failing to advance to the finals.  VanErp will compete in the long jump on Saturday and the OTC 4 x 800 relay team of Thomas Himmelspach, Eli Carlson, Brady Scholten and Brennan Amundson will be competing.

 

Jordan Tschumperlin of Barnesville did not place in the high jump.  Samantha Passa will be in the triple jump on Saturday.


In the AA competition, ninth-grader Ainsley Hansen finished tenth, just missing a medal in her first trip to the state meet.  Junior Sabrina Fronning failed to qualify for the finals in the 300 meter hurdles, also placing tenth in the prelims with a time of 45.90.  Senior Robert Sewell will be in the long jump on Saturday morning.
