The 12U Otter Gold baseball team has been busy getting better this past week, playing four games and winning two and losing two.

Thursday the Otters took on a very good Morris bunch and lost both games of the doubleheader. In game one, the Otters gave up five runs in the top of the first. Morris has very good pitching and the Otters were unable to overcome the deficit and lost 10-3. The Otter Gold team was led by Levi King who had two long triples to left field. Levi also scored two runs and had an RBI. Garrett Kuhn-Rice, Lucas Hanson, and Isaac Ellison also had singles. Ethan Schwartz walked and came around to score for the Otter Gold on a King triple.

Unfortunately game two started the same way as the Otters just didn’t play well defensively in the early innings. Morris jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first and never looked back. The Otters battled and did score a couple of runs in the bottom of the first as King doubled, Kuhn-Rice walked and Logan Larson singled to make the score 5-2. The Otter Gold team picked up another run in the bottom of the second on a RBI ground out by Robert Ehlert. That scored Hanson who had walked. That was all the offense the Otters could put together and the final scored ended at 11-3.

The Otters did play a much better brand of baseball Monday against Wahpeton, winning game one 10-1 and rallying late to win the nightcap 13-9. In game one, Wahpeton scored in their half of the first for a 1-0 lead but the Otters came right back. King walked and stole second and scored on a line drive base hit by Alex Ellison. Ellison would come around to score for a 2-1 Otter Gold lead.

The Otters were able to take advantage of some wildness by the Wahpeton hurlers and scored four runs in the bottom of the second. Kuhn-Rice had an RBI single and Andrew Klinnert connected for a long triple to right center to score two more. Isaac Iverson plated Klinnert with a single to give the Otters a 7-1 lead.

The Otters broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning when Jon Krava roped a long, bases loaded triple to right center to give the Otters 10-1 lead.

This time it was the Otters that had the pitching advantage and they shut Wahpeton down. King pitched three innings, striking out 7. Iverson pitched a scoreless fourth and Kuhn-Rice a scoreless fifth for the Otter 10-1 win.

The Otters had to battle from behind a couple of times in game two, but stayed after it and finally won the game. Wahpeton scored four runs in the top of the first but the Otters tied the game 4-4 without a hit in the bottom of the first. Otter Gold starter Isaac Ellison settled down and pitched a scoreless top of the second to get the boys back to the bat rack. This time they scored three runs on a RBI single by Klinnert and scorching, two run double down the third baseline by Lucas Hanson for a 7-4 lead.

Wahpeton took the lead back with two in the third and three in the fourth for a 9-7 lead. The Otters were able to answer that with six runs in the bottom of the fourth, once again taking advantage of some Wahpeton mistakes. Boston Rosin and Andrew Klinnert picked up big hits for the Otter Gold team to give them a 13-9 lead. Kuhn-Rice pitched a scoreless top of the fifth, striking out three, and giving the Otters a hard fought 13-9 win.
