The Breckenridge Cowboys went into the second round of Section 8AA baseball tournament play and came away with a 4-3 upset over #2 ranked Wadena Deer Creek on Thursday in Perham.

The Cowboys jumped out to a 1-0 lead the first inning when Hunter Feigum singled, stole 2nd, and scored on a single by Brayden Wahl. The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the third when WDC picked up 2 runs and added to their lead with another run in the 4th. But the Cowboys, like they’ve done so many times this season, rallied back in the 6th inning when Wahl singled to lead off the inning, Cooper Yaggie reached on an error and Jack Aigner doubled scoring Dylan Pearson who pinch ran for Wahl and Yaggie, tying the game. Carter Haugen laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Aigner to 3rd. Connor Twidwell reached on a fielder’s choice throwing the runner out at home. Max Johnson picked up the game winning single scoring Twidwell. Johnson also made a bases loaded, two out diving catch from his second base position on the right field line and made another great play on a ball behind first base.

The Cowboys ended up with 9 hits, led by Wahl with three and Aigner with two. Twidwell pitched the first three innings giving up 3 runs on 6 hits. Jake Wendorff pitched the middle two innings and Haugen pitched the final two innings. This was a total team effort with 16 Cowboy players contributing to the win.

The third game of the tournament, the Cowboys ran into #1 ranked Perham who lived up to their expectations. They 10 ran Pequot Lakes the first game and also did the same to the Cowboys winning 15-1. Hunter Feigum singled on the first pitch of the game and ended up scoring on a sacrifice bunt by Jeremy Stack that was misplayed. It was all downhill from there. The Cowboys struggled to throw strikes, walking or hitting 7 batters in the first inning and 1/3. Perham scored 4 runs on 2 hits in the first inning. Feigum led the team with 2 hits and Hayden Schuler had one hit. That was all the offense the Cowboys could produce.

The Cowboys play again on Tuesday postponing the start of their Legion season.
