Fergus Falls hosted the first day of the Section 8AA Track and Field Meet on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon.  The top eight finishers in each running event move on to the final day of competition on Saturday in Willmar as they attempt to qualify for the State Meet.  All relay events and 3 field events for boys and girls will also be contested on Saturday.

Fergus Falls junior Sabrina Fronning advanced to the finals in the 100 hurdles (15.64) with a fourth place finish and the 300 hurdles (46.16) with a second place finish.

Ainsley Hansen of the Otters qualified for state as runner-up in the high jump, clearing 5-feet-2-inches.

"For the second time this season, Ainsley won a jump-off in the high jump," reported Coach Niki Welde.  "This time it qualified her for the State AA meet.  She had an excellent day jumping, making every attempts on her first try.  That becomes important in placing later when ties are broken.  The difference today was that there were two other girls with the same record.  She kept her wits about her and prevailed on the second round of the jump-off.  I will say she made this event a little to exciting for my heart, but it also makes for a great story!"

Field event finals scheduled for Saturday include the girls shot put, triple jump and pole vault, and the boys discus, long jump and high jump.  Both boys and girls will also compete in the 1600 meter run finals that day.

Finals in the 3200 meter run, the girls discus, long jump and high jump, and the boys shot put, triple jump and pole vault were all held on Wednesday.

Moorhead leads the boys team standings after day one with 51 points.  Brainerd is second with 21, Foley third with16 and Alexandria fourth with 15.

The girls are led by Willmar with 30.33 points.  Alexandria is second with 29, followed by Brainerd with 19, Moorhead with 17 and Monticello with 15.
