On Wednesday, the Otter Boys Golf Team competed at Sub-Sections in Park Rapids.  They were ranked 4th going into the meet, with the top 3 advancing to the Section meet in Bemidji next week.  The boys would have something to say about the pre-ranking by moving up a spot and advancing as a team.

Trey Soydara ended up being co-medalist by shooting an impressive 76 on a very difficult golf course.  “This is Trey’s first high school victory and I am so proud of him.  If you have ever watched him hit the golf ball, you’d be surprised it his first win.  He is really good, and I honestly think this will kick start his game going into Sections and trying to qualify for state,” Coach Matt McGovern said.

However, it wasn’t just Trey that played well.  Senior Captain, Aaron Shelstad, continued his great play with a 77 which put him in a tie for 5th place.  “There was a moment in Aaron’s round where he could have let it get away from him, but he has the talent, and the experience, not to let that happen.  He didn’t start off great, being 4 over thru 7 holes.  Then he made 2 birdies in a row on 2 of the most difficult holes on the golf course, and that really turned it around for him,” McGovern added.

Rounding out the scores for the Otters were Sophomore Chance Fazio (83), Junior Hayden Shol (87), 9th grader Michael DeBrito (98), and 8th grader Charlie Fuder (100).

The tournament was won by Detroit Lakes with a team score of 308. Finishing just ahead of the Otters was Pequot Lakes with a 322, while Fergus finished with a 323.  Other team scores include Perham (335), Barnesville (344), and Hawley (376).  The Otters will play Monday and Tuesday of next week in Bemidji with their eye on making it to the state tournament.

“Our goal at Sections is for that tournament not to be the end of our season.  We have a very talented core of golfers and I wouldn’t count us out.  We are capable of doing great things”, said McGovern.

The Otters are coached by Matt McGovern and assistant coach Travis Johnson
