Top-seeded New York Mills got out of the gates fast on Tuesday, scoring eight runs in the first inning on the way to a 17-2 win over the Ashby Arrows in the opening round of the Section 6A softball tournament.

The Eagles added four second inning runs, a single run in the third and four more in the fourth to end the game by the 15-run rule.  Sophomore Grace Christenson led the offense with a 4-for-4 day, including three doubles.  She drove in three runs and scored three times.  Kenna Salo (2-4, 2SB, 2RBI, 3R) and Tiffany Thompson (2-3, 2B, 2RBI) also collected multiple hits for the Eagles, who had 13 hits on the day.  Thompson (4IP, 5H, 1ER, 1BB, 6K) was the winning pitcher as New York Mills improved to 19-2 on the season.

Ashby ends their year with a record of 4-14.  They were led by Courtney Koefod (2-2) Amelia Barry (1-3, R) and Maddie Bestul (RBI).

New York Mills will enter the double elimination state of the tournament with a 4:00pm game against fourth-seeded Brandon-Evansville at 4:00pm Thursday.  The location of the Thursday games is being determined as the Browerville fields have been deemed unplayable due to significant rainfall.
