The M State Fergus Falls Lady Spartan softball team lost game one to Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) 8-2, but scored three runs in the bottom of the 7th for an exciting walk-off 13-12 win in game two. The win puts the Lady Spartans in the Region XIII tournament as the number three seed. They will play Thursday. The site and time will be decided this weekend.

In game one, the Lady Spartans were in a scoreless battle until the bottom of the fifth when Ashlee Rimpila scored on a double by Allison Stafki to make the score 1-0 Lady Spartans. That score stood until the top of the seventh when RCTC plated 8 runs to put the game out of reach. Stafki did drive in another run with a double in the bottom of the seventh, but that was all the Lady Spartans could add and lost 8-2.

In game two, the Lady Spartans jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on a two run single by Hannah Ekse. After that, they would have to play catch-up all game long. RCTC scored five in the second to take a 5-2 lead, but the Lady Spartans rallied to tie it at 5-5 on a two out double by Ekse and a clutch two out RBI single by Ashlee Rimpila.

RCTC added five in the top of the fourth and another in the top of the sixth to take an 11-5 before the Lady Spartans finally showed some real energy. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Anna Carlson plated two runs with a single, Ekse hit a rope to the base of the fence for a two run double, and Rylee Lindquist singled in Ekse to make the score 11-10 in favor of RCTC.

RCTC added a run in the top of the seventh on a solo homerun to make the score 12-10 but the Lady Spartans rallied again with two outs. With Macky Warne on second, Stafki singled her home, Alexa Mortenson followed with a single to move Stafki to third. Mortenson stole second on the first pitch bringing up the Lady Spartans RBI leader Anna Carlson. Carlson hit a hard ground ball to the shortstop who threw high over the first baseman’s head allowing Stafki and Mortenson to score the tying and winning runs and give the Lady Spartans a 13-12 win.

Hannah Ekse had six runs batted in for game two and Alexa Mortenson picked up her 12th win with a great relief performance.

The Lady Spartans will now have to wait until the end of the weekend games elsewhere to learn where and when they will play.
