Lady Spartans Go 3-1 for the Weekend

The M State Lady Spartans wrapped up the first half of Minnesota College Athletic Conference (MCAC) Southern Division play with a Friday afternoon split with Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) and a Saturday morning sweep of the Blue Devils from Riverland College located in Austin Minnesota. This concluded a busy week for the Lady Spartans.

On Tuesday the Lady Spartans earned a road split with Anoka Ramsey. On Wednesday, the Lady Spartans traveled to St. Cloud to take on the #8 team in the nation, the St. Cloud Technical and Community College Cyclones. The Lady Spartans rallied late and scored three runs in the top of the 7th inning to take a 4-3 lead only to see the Cyclones hit a walk off grand slam in the bottom of the 7th  to win the game 7-4. In game two, the Lady Spartans were short on pitching and lost the game 26-8.

Friday found the Lady Spartans on the road again, this time in Rochester to take on RCTC. The Lady Spartans won game one 10-7 and lost the nightcap 14-6.

In game one, the Lady Spartans used a six run 3rd inning to build a big lead and kept adding on for the win. In the third inning, Alexa Mortenson had an RBI single, Anna Carlson roped a two run single and Ashlee Rimpila singled in two more for the lady Spartans for a 6-0 lead.

RCTC added a run in the third and three more in the fourth to make the score 6-4 Lady Spartans. In the fifth the Lady Spartans added two big runs on RBI hits by Carlson and Rylee Lindquist to increase the lead to 8-4. RCTC scored one in the fifth but the Lady Spartans got a huge two out, two run single by Lindquist for 10-6 lead. RCTC scored a run in the bottom of the seventh but Lady Spartan pitcher Alexa Mortenson got the final outs for the 10-7 Lady Spartan win.

Mortenson pitched the complete game for the victory. Carlson and Lindquist each had three runs batted in and Rimpila had two RBI.

In game two against RCTC jumped to an early lead and never looked back. Rylee Lindquist stayed hot with a couple of more runs batted in but the Lady Spartans never got on track and lost 14-6.

On Saturday, the rain and snow forced the Lady Spartans to play inside at the Packer Dome in Austin. The Lady Spartans played steady ball and ground out two wins. In game one, the Lady Spartans jumped to a 2-0 first inning lead when Allison Stafki scored on a wild pitch and Alexa Mortenson, who had doubled, scored on a double by Hannah Ekse.

In the second inning, the Lady Spartans added two more runs on a two run single by Stafki to increase the lead to 4-0. Riverland scored their only run of the day in the bottom of the third to make the score 4-1 Lady Spartans. That score stood until the top of the seventh. The Lady Spartans put the game away with a four run top of the seventh. The Lady Spartans used a couple of Riverland errors and clutch hits by Anna Carlson and Alexa Mortenson to add four runs and put the game out of reach.

Mortenson threw a complete game and picked up the win.

In the second game of the day, the Lady Spartans jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead on a solo homerun by Stafki, an RBI double by Ekse that scored Mortenson. Ekse was able to circle the bases due to two Riverland errors on the play.

The Lady Spartans a run in the second to make the score 4-0, added a run in the fourth on an RBI double by sophomore Macy Warne to make it 5-0. The Lady Spartans put the game away with a three run top of the fifth. Carlson doubled home Mortenson and Ashlee Rimpila had a clutch two out, two run single to make the score 8-0. Mortenson worked a very quick bottom of the fifth and the Lady Spartans had a five inning 8-0 victory.

Mortenson did a great job pitching for the Lady Spartans. She threw all four game winning three. Offensively, the Lady Spartans used a balanced lineup to score 32 runs for the weekend. They are now 9-8 overall and 4-6 in the very competitive Southern Division of the MCAC. The rest of the schedule is played at the home of the Lady Spartans with two games Tuesday against division leading St. Cloud.
