The Breckenridge Cowboys improved their record to 2-0 with an exciting 2-1 victory over Ortonville in their home opener on Tuesday.

“It was a beautiful night, the field was in great shape and we pitched great and played great defense,” said Breckenridge Head Coach Kevin Hiedeman. “I was very impressed with both Carter Haugen and Connor Twidwell tonight. Haugen pitched the first 2 2/3 innings striking out 6 and walking three. The only run Ortonville scored was on a strike three in the dirt and the runner ended up scoring on a wild pitch. Twidwell picked up his first varsity win on his first varsity trip to the mound pitching 4 innings striking out 5 and walking two. The duo combined for a 2 hitter tonight. On top of that, our defense did not make an error in the game.”

Offensively, the Cowboys struggled a bit, stranding a lot of runners in scoring position and only picking up 5 hits on the night.

“We were able to score one run in the bottom of the 3rd when Cade Kelsen walked and scored on a double by Jake Wendorff,” reported Hiedeman.

The Cowboys scored their second and winning run in the bottom of the 6th when Joe Skilbred singled on a line drive to centerfield and ended up scoring on a single by Max Johnson.

Ortonville made it exciting in the top of the 7th with a runner at 3rd and no outs but a pop up in the infield, a strikeout and a fly out to centerfield gave the Cowboys the 2-1 victory.

The Cowboys have a very demanding schedule playing a double header Thursday in Hawley and a double header Friday in East Grand Forks. “That’s 5 games in 4 days and it will really tax our young pitching staff. It will be a good challenge for us,” noted Coach Hiedeman.
