The Pelican Rapids Vikings split their season opening baseball double header with Frazee on Monday, losing the first game 3-0 but winning the second game on Logan Fahje’s walk-off single, 6-5.

Reggie Funk (4.1IP, 4H, 3R, 3BB, 7K) stared on the mound in the opener and took the loss.  His brother, Weston Funk struck out one and allowed one hit in his relief appearance.

The Hornets got their first run in the fourth inning on a pair of singles and a stolen base.  They added two more in the fifth on a pair of singles sandwiched around a walk and a hit batter.

The Vikings only threat came in the third inning when Hayden Christenson walked and stole second with one out.  He was stranded there when the next two hitters struck out.  The only hit for Pelican was a single by Ishmael Mejia in the fifth inning.  Contributing heavily to the outcome were the 18 strikeouts by Viking hitters, with Christenson the only player to reach second base.  Pelican Rapids committed three errors, while Frazee played errorless ball.

Behind Christenson’s complete game effort on the mound and his 3 hits at the plate, the Vikings were able to salvage the second game of the day.  The Vikings got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Christenson led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Reggie Funk walked and both runners scored on two more passed balls. The Hornets got one back in the fourth, with the benefit of a hit, on a walk, a stolen base and an error on a bunt.  Christenson did not allow a hit until the fifth inning.

The Vikings increased their lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Christenson singled with two outs and Funk and Damien Britton walked.  Weston Funk then hit a pop fly to right that dropped in and scored two.  Frazee tied the game in the sixth with two singles and two Viking errors.

The Hornets took the lead in the top of the seventh on a two-out walk, a stolen base and a run-scoring single by Gabe Drewes.  In the bottom of the inning, Christenson led off with a walk, Reggie Funk’s bunt was misplayed, allowing Christenson to move to third base.   He scored on a wild pitch with Funk taking second. Weston Funk followed with a single to left and after a strikeout, Fahje delivered the game winning hit.

Christenson gave up four hits, walked two and struck out four.
