The West Central Area boys golf team lost all-conference player Kaden Spindler to graduation, but return five varsity players from their starting lineup of a year ago.  Head Coach Kraig Hunter is in his thirteenth season leading the Knights on the links.

“Last year we had several newcomers to the sport so we were very inexperienced,” said Hunter.  “Now they have a year of varsity experience so we are looking for improvements.  This year, we will also have a few 2-sport athletes, so we will have different lineups at a lot of meets.”

Returning players are juniors Jacob Warde, Declan Johnson, Jacob Bright and Jack VanKempen, and sophomore Tate Christenson.  Sophomore Grant Beuckens will play golf and also be on the WCA baseball team this spring.

“We have seven golfers in grades 10-12 and we are excited that we have fifteen golfers in grades 7-9,” said Hunter.  “We may be looking at some younger players by the end of the season to fill out the varsity lineup.  Our main goal will be to have a good attitude on the course.  Having a good attitude when things don’t go well is the most important step to keeping your scores down and it is a direct lesson for life as well.  Our other goal will be to see individual improvement in all of our young golfers and to put together a competitive team by the end of May.”

The Knights are in the Quad County Conference which is comprised of Ashby, Underwood, Hillcrest, Rothsay, Ottertail Central, Long Prairie-Browerville, Ortonville, Wheaton, CGB, Pillager and West Central Area.

Hunter sees LQPV as the Section 5A favorite.  In the conference, Hunter feels OTC and Ortonville will be the top contenders.

Chelle Dewey will serve as junior high coach.
