The Fergus Falls baseball team opened their season with a 2-1 road win at Cold Spring on Tuesday, capitalizing on four Rocori errors in the game.

Michael Maanum got the Otters on the board in the third inning when he singled to lead off the inning, moved to second on a bunt by Jack Culbertson, alertly advanced to third when Rocori failed to cover and scored on an errant throw.  The Otters struck again in the sixth when Cole Knudson reached on an error and advanced to second as the throw got by the first baseman.  He came around to score on a single by Michael Wiederich.

Three Otter pitchers held the Spartan bats quiet for most of the game.  Ashwin Stratton started on the mound and threw three shutout innings giving up one hit while walking two batters and striking out four.  Cole Fronning pitched the next three scoreless innings to pick up the win.  Fronning gave up two hits, walked two and struck out two.  Wiederich came in to pitch the seventh inning.  After making things interesting by giving up a run and walking the bases loaded, he came back to strike out the last two hitters.  He gave up one run on one hit, allowed three walks and struck out two to pick up the save.

“I thought we played well considering we haven’t had the chance to be outside much at all,” said Head Coach Kevin Pearson of the Otters.  “Our pitchers threw strikes for the most part and our fielders made the plays behind them.  Our bats were pretty quiet but that is not surprising knowing this was the first time we have faced live pitching this year.”
