The Breckenridge Cowboys won their season opener 4-3 over West Central Area on Tuesday. Carter Haugen started on the mound and threw 6 and 2/3 innings for the Cowboys striking out 6 batters and walking 4. Carter gave up 3 runs but none of them were earned. Luke Arnhalt pitched the remaining 1/3 inning picking up the save.

West Central scored first with one run in the top of the 2nd inning. The Cowboys responded with 2 runs in the 3rd when Hayden Schuler walked followed by a bunt single by Hunter Feigum. Carter Hought sacrificed the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Schuler scored on a wild pitch and Feigum scored on a RBI fielders choice by Jack Aigner. In the 4th inning the Cowboys added to their lead when Jake Wendorff reached on an error and scored on a clutch 2 out single by Joe Skilbred. West Central cut the lead to 3-2 scoring a run in the 5th but the Cowboys picked up an additional insurance run in the 6th when Cade Kelsen led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. Max Johnson ran for Kelsen and scored on a sac fly by Hunter Feigum. West Central cut the lead to one run in the top of the 7th and had runners on 2nd and 3rd when the Cowboys recorded their final out for the win.

“For the first game of the season and only being outside a few times, I thought we played extremely well,” said Breckenridge Head Coach Kevin Hiedeman. “We only had one strikeout offensively and we did a great job bunting the ball today which led to a couple of our runs. Carter Haugen was fabulous on the mound. Hunter Feigum had a great day at the plate and in the field. Joe Skilbred made a diving catch in right with two outs to save a couple runs. Our double header scheduled for Thursday is postponed and we are waiting on Mother Nature to figure out when we can play our next game.”

West Central Area was led by Grant Beuckens (2-4, R) and Isaiah Sykora (2-4, R).  Tanner Bennett (3.2IP, 5H, 3ER, 2BB, 1K) took the loss for the Knights.
